Bad Breath in Pets

If you are a dog owner, you are familiar with the reality of “doggy breath” but what causes it and what can dog lovers do about it?

Dog bad breath is a common occurrence and unpleasant for everyone.  It can keep you from playing with your pet and getting close to it.  This can be upsetting for the dog and the dog owner.  Halitosis or bad breath is a foul and offensive odor coming from the dog’s breath.  Dog bad breath can be a sign of a serious problem.  The foul breath can be the result of an infection or other medical problem inside of the canine’s mouth.  However, the problem could be located elsewhere in the dog’s body and it is releasing the odor through the dog’s mouth.  Halitosis in dogs needs to be dealt with properly to protect your pet and keep it healthy.

Problems with a dog’s breath can significantly affect its entire body.  These problems detract from the pet’s well being and can shorten its life span.  Halitosis in your pet is mainly caused by an accumulation of germs and bacteria in its mouth.  Bacteria multiply and create spaces large enough to trap particles of food in the mouth.  This causes bad smelling abscesses.  Gingivitis, peritonitis, an oral ulceration or an oral tumor are all conditions that can cause bad breath in dogs.  All mouth problems lead to a buildup of bacteria in your animal’s mouth and this causes odor.

Bad breath can come from other parts of the body apart from the mouth.  Lung cancer for instance can cause halitosis in dogs.  Kidney disease can also be the culprit. By products are exhaled through the breath from the blood.  If a dog has a bleeding stomach ulcer, the bad odor of digested blood will come from the dog’s stomach and come out through its mouth.
If a dog has bad breath, look out for other symptoms.  Check for oral or bloody discharge.  You should also look out for drooling, depression, difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, pawing at the mouth, sneezing and nasal discharge.  These can be signs of mouth disorders.  If these symptoms occur along with bad breath, this can be an indication of disease or infection.

If a dog had bad breath, a vet will diagnose it using several steps.  The veterinarian will first go over your pet’s medical history and conduct a physical exam.  This exam will evaluate the health of the animal and will identify any illnesses or medical conditions.  The vet may also include a complete oral exam.  The vet will most likely give the dog an anesthetic.  This will allow the doctor to thoroughly examine your pet’s mouth and neck for infections or abnormalities.  The doctor will look for periodontal disease using a blunt probe to examine the teeth and gums and look for signs of the disease.  Last, a full mouth x-ray may be used to identify the main cause of your dog’s bad breath.

Proper dental care is important in treating canine halitosis.  Professional cleaning of your pet’s teeth and gums may be needed.  A veterinary dentist can take care of this after an internal cleansing.  Provide your dog with a healthy diet and regular dental care.  A dog may simply need better dental care to cure its bad breath.
